books and students

Three Griffin-Spalding County School System (GSCS) Students were recognized this week for their literacy excellence. The district’s top readers at the elementary, middle and high school level were surprised and given new Chrome Tablets courtesy of Vivacity Technology.

Crescent Elementary School Student Ezra Owusu is the GSCS top reader at the elementary level. Ezra has read more than two million words and 278 books this school year.

“My favorite book series are Harry Potter and Dragon Girls. My favorite thing about reading is that if I stop and close my eyes, I can picture myself in the book,” said Ezra.

Crescent Elementary Media Specialist Rhonda Grubb stated, “In all of my years as a teacher and media specialist, I have never seen a child read the volume of books that Ezra has read. He is a true rock star!”

Kennedy Road Middle School Student Chanrasmai Phoeun is the district’s top middle school reader. This school year, he has read 25 books and logged almost 5,000 minutes of reading. He has also demonstrated exceptional growth by increasing his Lexile score by over 500 points.

“I love to read nonfiction books because I want to learn about what is going on all over the world,” said Chanrasmai Phoeun.

Spalding High School Junior Jakiyah Shannon is the top high school reader. She has read 54 books and logged over 12,000 minutes of reading. Jakiyah enjoys reading fantasy and romantasy books.

“Even when I am busy, I have to take time to read or I don’t feel like myself. Reading centers me and makes me happy,” said Jakiyah.

GSCS Instructional Technology Director Lonny Harper stated, “We are grateful to Vivacity Technology (vivacitytech.com) for their generous donation. Their support not only celebrates student achievement but also encourages a continued love of reading across our schools. Partnerships like this reflect a shared commitment to educational excellence and student success.”
